The fires started in the Pacific Palisades on 1/7/2025, and have spread much further into the state of California. They have been a headline since.
Main idea: This fire could not have been avoided at all.
On 1/7/2025, people were ordered to evacuate the spectacular views of the Pacific Palisades. Now, 20 days later, the fire still rages, over 10000 structures have been destroyed, and the fires are still not fully contained. Currently, there are 3 fires, the Eaton Fire, Hughes Fire, and the Palisades fire. In 5 days, the Hughes Fire spread about 10,000 acres, which is 11x times the size of Central Park in New York. But, the good news is that all the fires are more than 94% contained thanks to the weekend storm and firefighters. Some people have also started returning to their homes in places like Santa Ana. In fact, all people are now able to return to the Pacific Palisades, where it started, as of today.
Here is why it could not have been avoided: while the cause is still under investigation by California’s government, climate change has made temperatures warmer, creating more favorable conditions for a fire. In addition, droughts have contributed to the fire weather and winds, such as the Santa Ana winds. These droughts have led to an accumulation of dry vegetation providing ample material to start a fire. Overall, extreme weather conditions are becoming worse, and this is a stark reminder to start caring for the planet. You will be affected, one day or another.
Kudos to all the firefighters and people who worked to stop the fires. If you were involved, feel free to comment below to share your thoughts and experience. Hopefully everyone has a safe return to their homes.
