2025: A Climate Year In Review

2025 is set to be 2nd or 3rd hottest year on record. From the Pakistan floods to the shortcomings of COP30, here’s the gist of what happened in 2025 in climate change.

Climate-related disasters caused an estimated $122 billion in global economic damage.

The year started off with the LA Fires making headlines and it was the warmest January ever on record.

In Feb to March, Arctic sea ice reached its smallest winter maximum extent.

In April, intense heatwaves in Europe causes about 4,700+ to 16,500+ deaths, making it the deadliest climate event of the 2025

April-July there were 455 deaths due to intense heat waves in India and Pakistan combined. The Central Texas Floods also took place which became the deadliest inland flood in the US in 50 years.

Jun-August, flooding in China causes $11.7 Billion in economic damages.

June-September, Pakistan floods caused over 1000 fatalities displacing more than 6 million people.

In October, Hurricane Melissa hit being the strongest Atlantic Hurricane of the year (Cat. 5).

In November, the Southeast Asia Cyclones caused $25 billion in damages across Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Now, in December, more climate change induced disasters are starting to unfold fueled by La Nina, such as NYC receiving record-breaking snow amounts, and the North American blizzard, leading to whiteout conditions in the Midwest (MN, IO, and WI).
