A strong El Nino is favored to come in summer of 2026, potentially lasting throughout the year. This could make 2026 or 2027 the hottest year on record, a record which is currently held by 2024.

There is a 62% that this will emerge between June and August, which has a 1/3 chance to become strong or “super” El Nino by winter according to the World Meteorological Organization.

According to Professor Adam Scaife, ““We know that under climate change, the impacts of El Niño events are going to get stronger, and you have to add that to the effects of climate change itself, which is growing all the time.”

In simple terms, El Nino is the increase of ocean surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, and La Nina is the decrease. These events are natural, but climate change makes them more frequent and intense.
