How to start your composting journey

Ever see your kitchen scraps or garden trimming thrown in the trash? Welcome to composting. In 2019, only 5% of food waste was composted.

Composting is the natural process of breaking down natural materials such as food scraps into a dark, crumbly material called compost. Composting helps to retain water, improve plant growth, and helps store carbon dioxide in the soil more effectively. It also reduces the need for fertilizers and pesticides. Composting also helps to keep the soil healthier which reduces erosion and runoff.

How to start in your backyard?

First, gather both green and brown compostable materials and build a pile.

Regularly turn the pile and keep it moist.

Select a well-drained shaded spot (outside of direct sunlight).

Start with twigs or straws for drainage on the first layer.

Then, put your green and brown materials (alternate them).

Water each layer for good moisture

Optional: Add a “starter” for more health with microoganisms

Optional: Accelerate the composting process with composting accelelators.
