There is good news for our planet

As this earth month wraps up, I wanted to share some good news for the planet. Despite most climate news being negative today, there are some milestones humanity has reached in combatting the climate crisis.

  1. For the first time in over 100 years, renewable energy has officially passed coal as the world’s largest source of electricity. China is the undisputed leader in renewable energy generation. Iceland (geothermal energy) and Norway (most EVs) also show significant leadership in renewable energy generation.
  2. 86 countries have ratified the UN High Seas Treaty which was entered into force in mid-January. It follows the 30 x 30 rule, meaning 30% of the ocean must be protected by 2030. Source: BBNJ Agreement | Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction
  3. Global deforestation has slowed, and in South America, the rates have halved since the 1990s. Globally, they have decreased by 6.7 million hectares per year from 1990s to 2015-2025
